Active Art Salon & Gallery

Along with my Shady Creek Winery art exhibit is another show at Active Art Salon & Gallery that is starting this Saturday! In this show I am focusing on interior spaces, instead of the landscapes that you have been seeing. The Northwest Indiana Times interviewed me and the article will be published on May 7th.

Shady Creek Winery + In the News

The opening at Shady Creek Winery was a success. It was a blast, I drank wine, I chatted with people I haven't seen in awhile, and met some new interesting people as well. Thank you to all that came, the art will be on display at least through June or maybe even longer so if you haven't seen it yet then please take the time to visit the winery. I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Derek Smith of the Herald Argus concerning the show, the article may show up in the Michigan City News Dispatch as well. View the article below:

MICHIGAN CITY — Despite its name, “Place I” isn’t really a location. In fact, the only map or GPS it can be found on is the one charting the creator’s mind.

“I feel like it’s more of a feeling than an actual place,” artist Amanda Heise said, gazing up at her framed print.

Hanging above the stone fireplace in the tasting room of Shady Creek Winery, “Place I” is part of Amanda Heise’s “Maps of My Mind” exhibit currently on display at the Michigan City winery, along with the works of another local artist, Tom Brand. The opening reception and meet the artist event is Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Perhaps because she wants viewers to have their own individual reaction to her pieces, the artist is a bit hesitant to reveal the “feeling” behind the place depicted in “Place I,” a multilayered work of pink green, blue and beige colors — characteristic of the artist’s frequent use of collage — and speckled with a few structures that (at least to this viewer) look like floating buildings in danger of being blown away.

“I think when I created this, I was feeling lonely,” the artist said when asked.

The idea of place is something that fascinates Heise, a 2005 graduate of La Porte High School and a 2009 graduate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Through print making and collage, she creates environments, from urban cities to rural landscapes, sometimes combing the two in unique ways.

One of her favorite pieces, “Inner City” (seen above), depicts her interpretation of a scene in downtown Milwaukee. Depending on how much she can visually recall a particular place, a varied degree of inventing and abstraction of space can occur. Sometimes, she draws entirely from locations she has only been to in her mind.

“I illustrate places where I’ve lived, been to or imagined,” she said Wednesday at the winery.

Heise, appearing low key next to her work in a buttoned black cardigan, black pants, simple gray flats, and straight blonde hair, works by day as a graphic designer at Royal Brush in Merrillville. After noticing other artists’s work displayed at Shady Creek Winery, she approached the owners about exhibiting her pieces.

Tim Anderson, the winery’s president and owner, was only too happy to help. Having opened in September 2009, the space has already been decorated with artwork from several local artists.

“We’re trying to support the local artist community by providing a venue for their work,” Anderson said. “It makes our space look better and gives them a public space (to exhibit). It’s a win win situation.”

Heise’s work will be displayed at the winery through June. Her pieces range from $40 to $400. During the opening reception on Saturday, however, there will be a 15 percent special on her work.

Shady Creek Winery

Maps of My Mind, plus artwork from the Biennial 25 at the South Bend Museum of Art, and some clusters from my installation Places: Connected will be on display at Shady Creek Winery with Tom Brand's work for the next couple of months. Saturday, April 24th, I will be there from 3-6pm for an opening reception type of thing. Please come and bring your friends. Shady Creek Winery is also an amazingly beautiful place with greatly crafted wines. My fiance bought some of their Ice wine for our wedding, it is really delicious! So if your not into art, then come for the wine!

*15% off special on all art on Saturday, April 24.
